It started with an idea…

The Perch has been a design proof of concept since its inception in 2016. It started with a friends trip into the Big Bend for a 30th birthday celebration that led to land scouting to finally setting the first shipping container precariously onto a cliffside in January of 2018. The style is a blend of Japanese summer homes, brutalism, retro sci-fi and a little Scandinavian pre-fab. Mixing modular shipping containers, traditional southwestern stucco and modern rusting weathering steel, the final result nearly 4 years later is a utility-focused, lofted cabin meant to accommodate everyone from up to 8 campers on their trip into Big Bend National Park to 2 couples looking for a retreat in nature.

Hi - I’m Spencer.

I'm a filmmaker, photographer and producer based in Bremerton, WA. I was born and raised in Texas, but I didn't discover the magic and allure of the Big Bend until I saw my first sunrise hit the Chisos on my 30th birthday trip with friends in 2016. Since then, I followed my gut and spent a better part of 3.5 years building The Perch out as you see it today. From the early days of hauling giant empty metal boxes up a plateau, to 110 degree days hoisting sheet metal, to subzero temps sleeping in a truck bed - it's been a journey to say the least!

Yet, despite the hardships, I knew in the end it would be worth it. I can't thank my wife, family and friends enough for keeping the spirit alive through all the ups and downs. Providing a retreat for others to enjoy this beautiful landscape as I have has been my sole driving passion. Focusing on renewable energy, minimal footprint, dark sky compliance and using part of your rental funds to give back to the community and the parks provides a net positive in the ever-changing way we humans travel and explore our outdoor spaces.
