Protecting the Dark

The Perch is a certified “Dark Sky Friendly” property, as signed off by the McDonald Observatory’s Dark Sky Initiative in partnership with the International Dark Sky Association

So what does that mean?

The Perch utilizes “Dark Sky Friendly” shielded fixtures, warm to amber bulb color temperatures, low wattage LED indirect task lighting and red light “cove lighting” in order to create a user-friendly environment that minimizes light pollution. This was a priority in building The Perch as photographing or simply viewing the night sky is a perk of the Big Bend that deserves protection and awareness.

From the McDonald Observatory -

“The McDonald Observatory and many partners are working to establish the Greater Big Bend International Dark Sky Reserve (DSR) in the Big Bend region of Far West Texas and Northern Mexico. Once completed and certified by the International Dark Sky Association (IDA), the reserve will encompass over 15,000 square miles of land and be among the largest reserves of its kind in the world.”
